Umuahia to Ekok: Chapter 3

The dawn broke over Umuahia, casting a pale light over the village that had once been vibrant with the sounds of laughter and life. Now, it lay under a veil of fear and tension. The memories of the previous day—the bustling harvest festival, the shared smiles, and the warmth of community—felt distant, like echoes from a time long past.

Nneka stood at the door of her humble home, peering out at a world that had suddenly turned hostile. The air was thick with dread, and she felt it weigh heavily on her shoulders. With Uche taken by Major Ibrahim, the void he left behind was suffocating. But there was no time to grieve; there was only time to act. The safety of her children depended on it.

Inside, the house was a flurry of quiet activity. Chima, her eldest, was gathering essentials with a determination that belied his seventeen years. His hands moved deftly, packing clothes and food into a small bag, his expression grim but focused. Emeka was nearby, watching his brother and trying to mirror his resolve, though his fifteen-year-old hands shook with barely concealed fear. Ada, always the gentle soul, was cradling Obi, whispering stories of heroes and adventures to keep the young boy calm.

"We have to leave before the soldiers come back," Nneka said, her voice a firm reminder of the urgency they faced. "We'll head north through the forest. The soldiers know this area well, but we have the advantage of knowing it better."

Chima nodded, meeting his mother's gaze with a maturity beyond his years. "I'll scout ahead, Mama. Make sure the path is clear."

Nneka reached out, resting a hand on her son's shoulder. "Be careful, Chima. We can't afford any mistakes."

The plan was simple: evade the soldiers and make it to the relative safety of the forest, where they could regroup and decide their next move. But simplicity did not equal ease, and the path ahead was fraught with peril.

As Chima slipped out the back door to scout their route, Nneka turned to the others. "Pack only what you can carry. Ada, stay close to Obi. Emeka, help with the supplies. We need to be quick and quiet."

The children moved with purpose, their small hands packing essentials into makeshift bags. There was no room for sentimentality, only survival.

The village around them was stirring to life, but it was a life muted by fear. Other families were also preparing to leave, their eyes hollow with the knowledge of the danger that lurked. Nneka caught glimpses of neighbors, their nods of understanding passing silently as they all prepared to flee the threat of Major Ibrahim and his men.

With the sun rising higher, casting long shadows over the village, Nneka gathered her children and led them towards the forest's edge. The trees loomed like ancient guardians, their branches stretching out as if to shield them from the eyes of the soldiers.

The forest was dense, the underbrush thick and tangled. Each step was careful, every rustle a potential alarm to their pursuers. Nneka moved with a steely determination, her senses heightened to every sound and movement.

Hours passed, the sun climbing steadily, the air growing heavy with heat and humidity. Sweat dripped down their backs as they forged deeper into the wilderness, the safety of the village now a distant memory.

Then, suddenly, the silence of the forest was shattered by the crack of gunfire. The sharp, menacing sound echoed through the trees, a chilling reminder that they were not alone.

"Down!" Nneka hissed, pulling Obi to the ground and signaling for the others to do the same. The children obeyed instantly, hearts pounding as they pressed themselves against the forest floor, their breaths shallow and quick.

In the chaos, a scream pierced the air—a sound that would haunt Nneka for the rest of her days. She turned, horror-stricken, to see Ada crumple to the ground, her hands clutching her side where blood blossomed against her dress. A stray bullet, a cruel twist of fate, had found its mark.

Ada's eyes, wide with pain and fear, sought her mother's, her breath shallow and labored. "Mama," she whispered, her voice barely audible. "I tried...to be brave."

Nneka cradled her daughter, tears streaming down her face. The world around her seemed to blur, the vibrant green of the forest fading as despair threatened to consume her. Chima and Emeka hovered nearby, their faces etched with shock and disbelief.

"Mama, we have to go," Chima urged, his voice choked with emotion. "The soldiers are coming. We can't stay here."

But Nneka was frozen, her heart breaking with each passing second. Ada, her gentle Ada, who had been a light in their darkest times, was gone. The reality was unbearable, but the urgency of their situation forced her to act.

With trembling hands, she closed Ada's eyes, whispering a prayer for her lost child. The pain was a physical thing, clawing at her insides, but she knew she had to move. Her remaining children needed her strength, needed her to lead them to safety.

Nneka nodded, though her heart felt heavy and hollow. She rose, taking Obi's hand once more, and steeled herself against the wave of grief that threatened to overwhelm her.

They continued their flight through the forest, the sound of soldiers' voices echoing behind them like the howls of a relentless predator. Major Ibrahim's men were closing in, and every second counted.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting the world into twilight, Nneka and her children pressed on. The night was a cloak, offering concealment from their pursuers, but it was also a reminder of the darkness that surrounded them.

They stumbled upon a clearing, just large enough to catch a breath, when the faint glow of flashlights cut through the trees behind them. The soldiers were close—too close. With their hearts pounding like war drums, Nneka knew they had only moments to act. Her eyes darted to the sheer cliff edge nearby, their only hope of escaping the relentless pursuit. The choice was clear, but terrifying—take a leap into the unknown or face capture.

The shadows deepened, and with them, Nneka's resolve. "We jump," she whispered, gripping Chima's hand tightly, the weight of Ada's loss propelling them forward. "Together."
