Umuahia to Ekok: Chapter 2

The morning dawned ominously over Umuahia, the previous day's festivities now a distant memory. As the village awoke, an uneasy calm settled over the narrow streets and thatched-roof homes. Nneka felt the change in the air, a palpable tension that had replaced the joyful atmosphere of the harvest festival.

The children were quiet as they sat at the breakfast table, sensing the shift in their parents' demeanor. Chima, always observant, watched his mother's face closely. Nneka was usually a picture of serenity, but today, her brow was furrowed, and her eyes carried a weight that he could not ignore.

Uche sat silently, staring at the food before him without appetite. He had always been the family's rock, his strength a source of comfort to them all. But now, even he seemed to be wrestling with a storm of emotions.

"Papa," Emeka ventured cautiously, "what's wrong? Why is everyone so quiet today?"

Emeka breaks the silence with a question.

Uche glanced at his son, forcing a reassuring smile. "Nothing you need to worry about, Emeka," he said, though his voice lacked its usual confidence. "Just some grown-up things."

But Chima was not so easily placated. "Is it about the soldiers?" he asked, his voice barely above a whisper. "I heard people talking yesterday."

Chima quietly asks about the soldiers.

Nneka exchanged a look with Uche, a silent communication passing between them. She reached across the table, placing a comforting hand over Chima's. "We're just being cautious, my dear. There are rumors, but that is all they are."

Before Chima could press further, the distant sound of heavy boots marching interrupted the morning stillness. The rhythmic thud echoed ominously, growing louder with each passing second. Nneka's heart skipped a beat, her grip tightening involuntarily around Chima's hand.

"They're here," Uche said quietly, rising from his seat with a grim determination.

Outside, the village was coming alive with fearful whispers and hurried movements. People peered nervously from behind curtains and doors as a column of soldiers, led by Major Ibrahim, marched into the square. The ground seemed to tremble under their boots, and the air was thick with tension.

Major Ibrahim cut an imposing figure, his uniform immaculate, his demeanor exuding authority and menace. His eyes scanned the gathering crowd, a predatory gaze that sent shivers down the spines of those it fell upon. He had waited for this day, the opportunity to exact revenge on the man who had once humiliated him.

The villagers gathered in the square, drawn by a mixture of curiosity and fear. Ibrahim's presence was like a dark cloud, casting a shadow over the entire community. He stopped in the center of the square, flanked by his soldiers, and surveyed the sea of anxious faces.

"Bloody civilians!" Ibrahim called out, his voice carrying over the crowd like a thunderclap. "I am Major Ibrahim, and I have come to restore order and discipline to this place. Anyone who harbors traitors or defies my command will face the consequences."

The threat hung heavily in the air, the villagers shifting uneasily, exchanging worried glances. Ibrahim's reputation was well known—his ruthlessness, his penchant for brutality. Uche stepped forward from the crowd, his shoulders squared and his expression resolute.

"I am Uche," he announced, his voice steady despite the danger that loomed. "I speak for this village. We are a peaceful people. There is no cause for violence here."

Ibrahim's eyes narrowed, a cruel smile playing on his lips. "Ah, Uche," he said, drawing out the name with disdain. "The hero of the people, the man who dared to challenge me. I remember you well."

Uche met Ibrahim's gaze unflinchingly. "We have done nothing wrong. Leave our village in peace."

Ibrahim chuckled, a sound devoid of humor. "Peace, you say? You who defied the might of the military? No, Uche, there can be no peace for those who oppose us."

Ibrahim dismisses Uche’s plea.

With a gesture, Ibrahim signaled to his soldiers. They advanced on Uche, seizing him roughly by the arms. The crowd gasped, a ripple of fear and outrage passing through them.

"Papa!" Chima cried out, starting forward, but Nneka caught his arm, holding him back.

"Stay here," she whispered urgently, her heart aching at the sight of her husband being taken away. "We must think of your brothers and sisters."

Uche was dragged toward a waiting military truck, his head held high, his dignity unbroken even in the face of arrest. He glanced back at his family, a silent message of love and resilience passing between him and Nneka.

"Uche will be an example," Ibrahim announced to the crowd, his voice dripping with malice. "Let this be a lesson to all who think they can defy us. And know this—I will return for the rest of his family."

Nneka felt a chill run through her, the full weight of Ibrahim's words sinking in. She held her children close, her mind racing with plans to protect them from the impending danger.

The truck roared to life, a cloud of dust rising as it carried Uche away, leaving a void that seemed to swallow the village whole. The villagers stood in stunned silence, their hope dimmed by the oppressive presence of Ibrahim and his men.

As the soldiers dispersed, Nneka turned to her children, her resolve hardening into a fierce determination. "We must leave," she said, her voice steady despite the fear that gnawed at her. "Pack only what you need. We cannot stay here."

Chima nodded, understanding the urgency of their situation. "Where will we go, Mama?"

"To safety," Nneka replied, her eyes meeting each of her children's in turn. "I promise you, we will find a way."

As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting long shadows over the village, Nneka and her children began their preparations to flee. The storm had arrived, and with it, the promise of a mother's love that would guide them through the darkest of nights.
