When the Crow Flies: Chapter 6

The hospital room was sterile and quiet, the steady beep of the heart monitor the only sound breaking the silence. Adesuwa lay on the bed, staring at the ceiling, her body aching from the impact of the accident. She hadn’t expected to end up here, but she knew this wasn’t an accident. Someone wanted her dead. The realization sent a chill down her spine, mingling with a new, persistent sense of paranoia.

Adesuwa lies awake in hospital after the accident.
Adesuwa lies awake in hospital after the accident.

She winced as she shifted in bed, her mind racing through the events of the past few days. The attack had been a clear warning, a desperate attempt to scare her away. But she was more certain than ever that this was bigger than a single person. This conspiracy had threads that ran deep, snaring everyone around her. She no longer knew who she could trust—even Tayo seemed to be hiding something.

Pain and suspicion keep Adesuwa restless in the hospital.
Questions through the pain.

As if on cue, Tayo appeared at the doorway. He entered the room quietly, his eyes flickering with a mixture of relief and guilt as they met hers. He stood by her bedside, his hands stuffed in his pockets, looking as if he’d rather be anywhere else.

Tayo arrives at Adesuwa’s bedside, visibly uneasy.
An uneasy visitor.

“Adesuwa,” he murmured, his voice low. “I’m… I’m sorry. I didn’t think things would get this bad.”

Tayo apologizes for how dangerous the search has become.
An apology with secrets.

She watched him carefully, searching his face for answers. “Didn’t think what would get this bad, Tayo?” she asked, her tone sharper than she intended.

Adesuwa demands to know what Tayo means.
What did he expect?

He flinched, looking away. “I told you before—you need to let this go. These people… they don’t play games. They’re dangerous. You’re risking your life digging into things that were meant to stay buried.”

Tayo again warns her that the people involved are dangerous.
He wants her to let go.

She shook her head, anger simmering just beneath the surface. “And you? Are you one of them? Are you hiding something from me too?”

Adesuwa asks whether Tayo is hiding his own part in the conspiracy.
Is he one of them?

His eyes widened, hurt flashing across his face. “I’m trying to protect you, Adesuwa. I never wanted you to get hurt. But you don’t understand what you’re up against. These aren’t just ordinary people. They have power, money… connections that reach far beyond this town.”

Tayo insists that he is trying to protect her from powerful people.
Protection or concealment?

“Then help me understand,” she replied, her voice tinged with desperation. “If you really care about me, tell me the truth.”

Adesuwa asks Tayo to help her understand the danger.
A plea for the truth.

He looked at her, the conflict plain in his eyes. “I can’t,” he said finally, his voice barely a whisper. “There are things I know—things I shouldn’t have ever found out. If I tell you, we’ll both be in danger.”

Tayo says that sharing his knowledge would endanger them both.
What he cannot say.

She felt a surge of frustration, mixed with a painful longing. She had once trusted Tayo with everything, but now he felt like a stranger. He seemed torn, unwilling to say more, but his presence only added to her suspicions. Did he know more about the conspiracy than he was letting on? Was he complicit, or just as trapped as she was?

Adesuwa no longer knows whether Tayo is trapped or complicit.
A familiar face, a stranger.

“Fine,” she said coldly, turning away from him. “If you won’t help me, I’ll find the truth on my own.”

Adesuwa resolves to find the truth without his help.
She turns away.

He reached out, placing a hand on her arm. “Adesuwa, please. I’m begging you—walk away. This isn’t worth your life.”

Tayo reaches for Adesuwa’s arm and begs her to walk away.
A desperate appeal.

She pulled her arm away, glaring at him. “I’ve already lost my life, Tayo. Ten years of it, stolen from me. I have nothing left to lose.”

Adesuwa rejects his plea, remembering the years already stolen.
Nothing left to surrender.

He stood there, silent, then slowly backed away, looking as if he wanted to say something more but couldn’t find the words. After a moment, he left, leaving her alone with her thoughts and the crushing weight of betrayal.

Tayo leaves without answering her questions.
Another silence left behind.

As the night deepened, the hospital grew quiet. Shadows crept across the walls, and Adesuwa lay awake, feeling the suffocating presence of fear settle over her. Every creak of the floor, every distant murmur seemed amplified, as if the walls themselves were watching her.

Adesuwa lies awake as the hospital grows quiet.
Fear in the quiet hours.

She dozed off, slipping into a restless sleep, only to be jerked awake by the soft creak of the door. Her heart raced as she sat up, squinting into the darkness. A shadowy figure stood at the foot of her bed, silhouetted against the faint glow from the hallway.

A shadowy stranger appears at the foot of Adesuwa’s bed.
An unwelcome visitor.

She opened her mouth to scream, but the figure raised a finger to their lips, silencing her. Leaning closer, they whispered, their voice low and menacing. “You’ll never find out the truth. Leave now, or you won’t live to regret it.”

The stranger silences Adesuwa and delivers a threat.
A warning in the dark.

Before she could react, the figure slipped back into the shadows, disappearing as quickly as they had come. She sat there, frozen, her pulse pounding in her ears. The threat hung in the air, filling her with a fresh wave of terror. But as the initial fear faded, it was replaced by something stronger—a fierce determination.

The intruder vanishes, leaving Adesuwa shaken.
Fear gives way to resolve.

They could try to scare her, but she was done being a victim. Whoever was behind this conspiracy was desperate to keep the truth hidden. And that meant she was getting closer. She didn’t care how many threats they threw her way. She would find them, and she would bring their secrets crashing down.

Adesuwa resolves to uncover the secrets behind the threats.
Closer to the truth.
There’s more to the story.
