CHAPTER 12

The Therapist: Chapter 12

Claire sat in the dimly lit lounge of a boutique hotel in Victoria Island, staring at the man she once believed was the love of her life. Daniel Olukoya sat across from her, swirling his whiskey with a slow, calculated motion. His charm was still there—the easy smile, the gentle touch of his hand on hers—but something beneath it felt different now.

Daniel smiles and touches Claire's hand while she watches him doubtfully.
Familiar charm begins to feel calculated.

“Claire,” he said smoothly, his eyes locking onto hers, “you’ve waited long enough. It’s time to finalize the divorce.”

Daniel urges Claire to finalize her divorce.

Claire shifted uncomfortably in her seat. “I need more time, Daniel. Victor—”

“Victor doesn’t own you anymore,” Daniel cut in, his voice sharper than she remembered. “You said you wanted out. What’s stopping you?”

Daniel challenges Claire’s hesitation.

Claire swallowed, feeling the walls closing in. “It’s not that simple. Victor isn’t just going to let me walk away. He’ll fight me for everything.”

Claire explains why leaving Victor will be difficult.

Daniel leaned in closer, his grip on her hand tightening. “Which is why you need to push forward. The settlement you’ll get from the divorce will be more than enough to start fresh.”

Daniel presses Claire to pursue the settlement.

Claire looked down at their entwined hands, a flicker of doubt creeping in. She had dreamed of leaving Victor, of breaking free from his controlling grip, but something about Daniel’s urgency felt off.

Claire studies their joined hands with growing doubt.

Daniel’s voice softened. “Listen, babe. I just want us to be together. That money will change everything for us. I can finally clear my debts, start that business I’ve been talking about.”

Daniel reveals his plans for the divorce money.

There it was. The first crack in his façade. Claire’s eyes snapped up to his. “Debts?”

Daniel hesitated for a fraction of a second before forcing a smile. “It’s nothing serious. Just a little financial setback. But once we get that money, everything will be fine.”

Daniel tries to minimize his financial trouble.

Claire pulled her hand back slowly, her heart sinking. “I didn’t know you were in trouble, Daniel.”

Claire pulls her hand away from Daniel.

He exhaled, shaking his head. “Claire, don’t do this. Don’t overthink it. We have a future together—don’t let Victor keep you trapped in that life.”

Daniel urges Claire not to question their future.

Meanwhile, Marcus sat in his office, staring at his laptop screen, his fingers drumming anxiously on the desk. He had spent the past few days digging into Daniel’s background, and what he found confirmed his worst suspicions.

Marcus studies what he has found about Daniel.
Marcus studies what he has found about Daniel.

Daniel was drowning in debt—millions owed to shady loan sharks and failed business deals. He wasn’t the innocent first love Claire had imagined; he was a man desperate for a way out, and Claire’s divorce payout was his golden ticket.

Marcus confirms the extent of Daniel’s debts.

Marcus leaned back, rubbing his temples. If Claire went through with the divorce blindly, she’d be walking straight into another toxic relationship—one built on manipulation and financial desperation.

He had to warn her.

Claire’s phone buzzed with a message from Marcus: “We need to talk. It’s urgent.”

She sighed, hesitating before responding. She wasn’t in the mood for another lecture from him. She already knew what he thought of Daniel. But something about the urgency in his message unsettled her.

Claire hesitates before replying to Marcus.

An hour later, Claire walked into Marcus’s office, arms crossed defensively. “What is it, Marcus?”

Marcus gestured for her to sit, his face unusually serious. “Claire, I’ve been looking into Daniel. I know this isn’t what you want to hear, but you need to know the truth.”

Marcus asks Claire to sit and hear the truth about Daniel.

Claire bristled. “Marcus, I didn’t come here for a lecture on my love life.”

Claire resists Marcus’s warning.

“This isn’t about your love life,” Marcus said, sliding a folder across the desk. “It’s about your future.”

Marcus slides a folder of evidence toward Claire.

Claire hesitated before picking it up, flipping through the pages. Her face paled as she scanned the documents—bank statements, loan records, and a long trail of financial ruin.

Claire reads the financial records in shock.

“He’s in deep trouble, Claire. Millions in debt. And you think it’s just a coincidence he came back into your life now?”

Claire’s hands trembled slightly, but she quickly composed herself. “Daniel wouldn’t use me like that. He loves me.”

Claire tries to defend Daniel despite the evidence.

Marcus sighed. “Claire, love and desperation can be a dangerous mix. He needs money, and you’re his solution.”

Marcus warns that desperation can distort love.

Claire closed the folder, setting it aside. “I know Daniel. He’s been through tough times, but he’s not using me.”

Marcus leaned forward, his voice softer. “I want to believe that. But what if you’re wrong?”

Marcus asks Claire to consider the possibility she is wrong.

Claire stood, her expression a mix of anger and doubt. “I appreciate your concern, Marcus, but I can take care of myself.”

Claire rises, insisting she can take care of herself.

Marcus watched helplessly as she walked out, the weight of her denial pressing heavily on his chest.

That evening, Claire sat alone in her bedroom, the folder Marcus had given her resting on the nightstand. Daniel’s words echoed in her head, but so did the cold, hard facts in those documents.

Was she being naive?

Marcus, meanwhile, paced in his apartment, knowing that Daniel could be the wildcard that ruined everything. If Claire went through with her divorce without caution, it could complicate his fragile arrangement with Baba Jide—and put them all in even greater danger.
