CHAPTER 1

Shina's Tinderbox: Chapter 1

The weight of my family's legacy hung like a millstone around my neck, slowly dragging me into the depths of despair. I'm Shina Adesanya, the so-called "black sheep" son that my wealthy, overbearing father Chief Tunde Adesanya could never seem to stop being disappointed in no matter how hard I tried.

Shina sits alone with his head lowered and hands clasped in an elegant family sitting room.
The weight of expectation.

From a young age, I was branded as the underachiever, the troubled child whose mere existence brought shame to the prestigious Adesanya name. While my older brother Jude seemed to effortlessly embody every quality my father worshipped - discipline, ambition, refined poise - I rebelled against his relentless control and scathing criticism.

Young Shina stands under his father’s critical gaze while Jude receives approval.
Always in Jude’s shadow.

The immense pressure of never being good enough, of eternally lingering in Jude's shadow calcified into anger management issues and a dependence on alcohol to numb the gnawing feelings of inadequacy. Like an obedient savant, Jude excelled academically and professionally on a pristine path to one day inherit my father's vast multinational conglomerate.

Shina sits alone with a drink, weighed down by anger and inadequacy.
The pressure settles inward.

Meanwhile, I became the literal cautionary tale trotted out at every Adesanya family gathering. The drunk, aimless screw-up that bounced from hustle to venture without any sense of purpose or self-worth beyond chasing the next high to quiet the demons. In my father's scornful eyes, I was a perpetual disappointment.

At a family gathering, Shina sits under his father’s disapproving gaze while Jude stands composed.
The cautionary tale.

That fateful November night at the extravagant Geodis Gala proved how far I had truly strayed into the abyss of self-loathing and vices. Surrounded by Lagos' toxic 'upper-crust' elitism that I inevitably fell woefully short of, I sought oblivion in the bottom of a whiskey glass, abusing the open bar like an insecure youth.

Shina withdraws to the open bar at the Geodis Gala.
The November gala.

With each bitter swig, I could almost hear Chief Adesanya's condescending timbre echo through my mind:

Shina takes a bitter sip while his father’s criticism echoes in his mind.
A bitter swig.

"Taking the family name in vain again, I see. When will you apply yourself like your brother Jude? Another embarrassment is all you'll amount to."

Shina lowers his glass, stung by the remembered comparison with Jude.
Another embarrassment.

Perhaps the universe detected my self-destructive nadir that night, deciding to inject some much-needed gravity and light into this stagnant, cyclical inertia I was trapped in. Because as I scanned the shimmering, sycophantic crowd of Lagos' privileged coming to fawn over one another, my eyes locked onto the most radiant, life-giving presence.

Shina turns from the bar and notices Amara across the gala.
A presence across the room.

In a vacuous sea of cosmetically-enhanced socialites and instagram/BBL models, she stood out like a supernova piercing the void - Amara Ihuoma. An exotic, caramel-skinned beauty whose mere aura commanded this whole superficial spectacle to bow and rearrange itself around her natural essence.

Amara stands confidently beside the artwork at the gala.
Amara Ihuoma.

At first, I shamefully dismissed her as just another vapid 'it' girl acquisition or flavor-of-the-month for the upper-crust to momentarily obsess over. How misguided that prejudice would prove to be. My friend Titi, the elite events planner who organized these society soirees, bluntly introduced Amara as the featured artist.

Titi introduces Amara as the gala’s featured artist while Shina listens.
The featured artist.

Not some pretty ornament to objectify, but a visionary creative from the Bariga area whose vibrant work was exclusively invited to be showcased at the Gala. My initial perception shattered, I instantly became transfixed by Amara's unmistakable passion, authenticity and artistic spirit.

Amara speaks about her work while Shina listens with growing admiration.
An artist’s passion.

As we spoke, it dawned on me that she didn't subscribe to bourgeois propriety or give a damn about hollow social prestige. Rather than perform niceties, Amara spoke truth bluntly - calling out my coping crutches like the whiskey glass without filter or fear of elitist judgment.

Amara questions Shina’s reliance on the glass in his hand.
An honest question.

In her presence, I finally felt the dense fog of negativity and alcohol that perpetually clouded my vision begin dissipating for the first time in forever. This woman saw right through the manufactured Adesanya facade and intimidating family legacy, locking eyes with the insecure, struggling soul I had buried underneath it all.

Shina meets Amara’s gaze and begins to let his guard fall.
Seen beyond the family name.

Amara neither judged nor pedestalized me, but pushed me to confront myself authentically, vulnerably. A stark divergence from the shallow, image-obsessed leeches I was unfortunately accustomed to. I felt alive again, like a withered husk being steadily revived and reawakened by Amara's free spirit and intoxicating creative energy.

Shina begins to answer Amara with unexpected honesty.
A more honest conversation.

But of course, feeling that intoxicating yet forbidden taste of true connection and life's revitalizing force would prove fleeting. Just as Amara and I really began unveiling more of ourselves to one another, a belligerent, raging force exploded into the scene in a frenzy.

Shina and Amara turn as an angry interruption breaks into the gala.
The conversation breaks.

Her unhinged, obsessive ex Leke detonated into the opulent gala like a deranged human IED, hellbent on scorching the entire evening into a crisis of his own making. Despite my family's elite wealth and imperial societal stature casting an ever-present shadow, even Chief Adesanya's twice-yearly distinguished donors' gala transformed into this madman Leke's personal circus for causing anarchy.

Leke storms into the gala as security moves toward him.
An unwanted arrival.

From the snippets Amara hinted at, Leke was incapable of accepting their toxic romance was over and done. The man deluded himself into believing he still possessed some deranged entitlement and sovereignty over Amara's life. He clung desperately to the mere malleable idea of her, rather than respect her as the autonomous, transcendent spirit she truly was.

Amara hints at the possessiveness behind Leke’s outburst.
A past he would not release.

As Geodis' squad of bulked-up private security personnel struggled to extract the raving Leke from the gala, I trembled at just how swiftly that explosive, unhinged rage could have potentially escalated into something even more terrifying and brutal. All in front of this amazing, unorthodox woman who had beamed the warm, revitalizing light of freedom into my repressed soul just moments ago.

Security escorts Leke out while Shina watches, shaken.
The guards take him away.

The unfolding scene was jarring, destabilizing - yet Amara kept her unshakable poise and calming presence. As if this level of intensity and volatility was simply an occupational hazard for someone as dynamically alive and uncompromising as herself. If anything, I detected an impish glint of intrigue flashing in her entrancing, kohl-rimmed eyes.

Amara remains composed despite the commotion around her.
Unshakable poise.

Rather than recoil from Leke's madness, she calmly strode over and handed me her number amid the chaos, whispering mischievously in my ear:

Amara slips Shina her number and leans close to whisper.
A number amid the chaos.

"Don't waste this life, Shina."

Amara quietly urges Shina to make more of his life.
Don’t waste this life, Shina.

In that singular moment, I felt the dense atmospheric fog of purposeless stagnation and self-doubt that had been misting over my entire existence finally precipitate away. Amara was no mere fleeting burst of light before the inevitable darkness - she embodied the radiant dawn itself.

Shina looks up with a new, tentative sense of hope.
A different kind of light.

I knew it from the depths of my shaken spirit that this remarkable, uncompromising woman would utterly upend and rearrange every facet of my life in irreversible ways. For better or worse, the obsessive journey into Amara's complicated, tempestuous world had officially begun. I was unavoidably drawn in by her gravitational pull, inevitably colliding together.

Shina and Amara share a hopeful look as the gala resumes around them.
The beginning of their story.
There’s more to the story.
