Chapter 6

Dede discovers a worn USB drive in her father's old briefcase.
Dede discovers a worn USB drive in her father's old briefcase.

The anonymity of her apartment offered little solace. The relentless drone of Lagos traffic, usually a familiar lullaby, now grated on her nerves like the buzzing of a trapped insect. Shadows danced in every corner, whispering her name in the same menacing tone as the text message seared into her memory. It was time to act, or be consumed by this suffocating fear.

Dede finds little comfort in her apartment.
The threat follows her into familiar rooms.

A frantic search unearthed a well-worn USB drive at the bottom of her father's old briefcase. It was a relic from another time, a time before... before whatever had befallen him. Her father, a man of principles and quiet ambition, had always been a mystery she’d longed to solve. Now, clutching this fragment of his past, fear gave way to a desperate flicker of hope.

Dede finds a worn USB drive in her father’s briefcase.
A small relic offers a new possibility.

Her meticulously organized computer seemed a mockery of the chaos within her. Trembling, she inserted the USB drive.  A single folder blinked on the screen, its name a punch to her gut: "HX - EYES ONLY."  Her father had stumbled onto something, something that might have cost him dearly.

Dede inserts the USB drive into her computer.
The hidden folder changes what she thought she knew.

Within the folder lay a seemingly innocuous text file. Yet, as she scrolled through lines of code and cryptic notes, a sinking realization washed over her. Her father wasn't just an accountant; he'd possessed a hidden skill, a weapon she might be able to wield against HX. And amidst the code, like a beacon in the darkness, was a name: Emeka.

Dede studies the hidden notes on the drive.
Her father’s secret skills open a new path.

Who was he? An accomplice?  Another victim? The thought of reaching out filled her with trepidation, yet it thrummed with the same desperate defiance that had fueled her confrontation with Asukwo. With a shaking hand, she typed a single message, a plea tinged with the promise of an impossible fight: "HX bleeds its people dry. Can you help me make them pay?"

Dede reaches out to the unknown Emeka.
She asks for help against HX.

The response was almost immediate, laced with a skepticism that mirrored her own.  "HX?  You've got guts, I'll give you that. But taking them down…that's a suicide mission."

Dede reads Emeka’s skeptical reply.
His warning echoes her own fear.

She typed back, her fingers flying across the keyboard: "I have information. Proof. I just need someone who knows how to fight in their world."

Dede quickly replies that she has proof.
She needs someone who understands their digital world.

A tense silence, then: "Meet me. Tomorrow. Midnight. Code word: Ledger."  She hesitated, then added  a detail only someone who knew her father would recognize: "And the answer is always 42."

Dede adds a detail only her father’s associate would recognize.
The meeting is set for the next midnight.

The rendezvous point was a ramshackle internet cafe tucked away in a maze-like side street, its dim lighting casting an almost comforting anonymity. A figure hunched in a shadowy corner, fingers a blur on a grime-encrusted keyboard.

Emeka waits at a computer in the dim internet café.
The midnight meeting begins in an anonymous corner.

"Ledger?" Dede's voice was barely a whisper.

Dede whispers the agreed code word.
She tests whether she has found the right person.

The figure turned, and a flicker of amusement danced in his eyes. "So, the quiet accountant wants to start a revolution?"  Young, with a bravado that barely masked insecurity, Emeka was exactly the opposite of what she'd expected.

Emeka turns with an amused, uncertain grin.
The young hacker is not what Dede expected.

"HX stole something from me," she countered, the thought of her father fueling her courage. "I want it back."

Dede tells Emeka that HX took something from her.
A personal loss gives her courage.

He leaned closer, intrigued. “Everyone pays the toll to those vipers sooner or later. What makes you different?”

Emeka leans closer and asks what makes Dede different.
Curiosity begins to replace bravado.

"I know how they hide their money. I can map their empire." She watched as a mix of doubt and greed warred across his face. Then, she lowered her voice, "My father... he worked on this. They might have taken his life."

Dede explains her evidence and her father’s connection.
The case becomes personal for both listeners.

Emeka straightened. There was a glint in his eyes now, something beyond greed. Perhaps a flicker of empathy, or perhaps the thrill of a challenge. "Alright, accountant, show me what you've got."  He gestured to the computer. "Show me how deep this rabbit hole goes."

Emeka invites Dede to show him the evidence.
He agrees to see how far the trail leads.
There’s more to the story.
