Chapter 3

Inspector Hassan looks out over rain-lashed Lagos while Sergeant Bamidele waits with a report.
Inspector Hassan looks out over rain-lashed Lagos while Sergeant Bamidele waits with a report.

Inspector Abubakar Hassan stared out at the storm-lashed streets of Lagos from his cramped office. The relentless drumming of rain on the tin roof mirrored the dull thumping of his heart. Another day, another pile of unsolved cases, another wave of helplessness threatening to drown him. He was bone-tired of chasing petty thieves and settling neighborly squabbles while the truly powerful played their games unchallenged.

Inspector Hassan stares wearily over the storm-lashed street.
Unsolved cases weigh on an exhausted investigator.

"Wetin be dis, Inspector?" Sergeant Bamidele waved a crumpled paper in front of Hassan's nose. "Some overzealous accountant thinks she's found the next big fraud? Waste of our time, if you ask me."

Bamidele dismissively presents the anonymous report to Hassan.
The accountant’s tip receives a skeptical welcome.

Hassan sighed, rubbing gritty sleep from his eyes. He'd long ago shed any illusions of heroism. But even a jaded man could recognize the difference between a disgruntled employee and this – a meticulously detailed report, outlining a web of financial deceit within HX Petroleum.

Hassan studies the detailed financial report through tired eyes.
The care behind the evidence deserves attention.

"HX?" Bamidele scowled. "Oga, you know those ones no dey play. You go poke a nest of vipers, they'll sting you back."

Bamidele warns Hassan against provoking HX.
He knows the company’s reach.

"Perhaps," Hassan conceded. A flicker of stubborn determination ignited in him. "But even the biggest snakes shed their skins, and a man with the right eyes can follow the trail."

Hassan responds with renewed determination.
Even powerful suspects can leave a trace.

The anonymity of the tip was both intriguing and frustrating. Whoever this was, they knew how to hide, how to speak the silent language of numbers. Hassan envisioned a figure hunched over a flickering computer screen, a quiet warrior armed with spreadsheets instead of a sword. It was a fool's hope, perhaps. Yet, amidst the endless cycle of disappointment, it was a hope he desperately needed.

Hassan considers the careful work behind the anonymous tip.
The report offers an unexpected reason for hope.

Days later, they found themselves in the sterile, opulent boardroom of HX Petroleum. Chief Mfon Asukwo oozed a charm that reeked of insincerity. "Inspector, this surprise visit, it disrupts our business. Surely, the police have more pressing matters to attend to?"

Asukwo greets Hassan and Bamidele in the opulent boardroom.
Courtesy conceals irritation at the unexpected visit.

Hassan held the man's calculating gaze, refusing to yield. "Routine check, Chief Asukwo. We ensure even the most respectable businesses follow the letter of the law.” The lie tasted bitter, but it served its purpose.

Hassan holds Asukwo’s gaze while describing a routine check.
He conceals the purpose of the visit.

The game had begun. A flicker of unease marred Asukwo's practiced smile, the first sign that his world might not be as untouchable as he believed. This anonymous accountant, this phantom in the machine, had set something in motion. And Hassan, as jaded as he was, had never been one to turn his back on the slimmest chance of shaking things up.

A flicker of unease crosses Asukwo’s face.
The visit has disturbed his confidence.
There’s more to the story.
