HX: Chapter 1

Chapter 1

Dede studies suspicious figures on her screen in the petroleum company's accounting office.
Dede studies suspicious figures on her screen in the petroleum company's accounting office.

The rhythmic clicking of Dede Ogunsanwo's keyboard was a symphony of defiance amidst the sterile hum of HX Petroleum's accounting department. Lagos pulsed outside the tinted windows, a chaotic heartbeat beneath the company's veneer of polished perfection. But Dede wasn't built for the glitz that fueled HX; she was built for the intricate dance of numbers, the quiet thrill of making sense of the nonsensical.

Dede works at her keyboard in the quiet accounting department.
Numbers have always made sense to her.

Tonight, there was no thrill. Just a creeping dread that bloomed somewhere beneath her ribs. The figures on her screen danced in mockery. Discrepancies whispered at first, then swelled into a cacophony of missing funds, phantom suppliers, shell companies with addresses that evaporated into thin air. This wasn't sloppy bookkeeping; it was a masterpiece of theft.

Dede discovers alarming discrepancies in the accounts.
The figures point toward deliberate theft.

A sharp rap on her cubicle wall made her jump. Helen, the self-proclaimed queen of the department, materialized with a smirk that could strip paint. "Still slaving away, Dede? Some of us have lives outside these hallowed halls."

Helen startles Dede with a sharp rap on the cubicle wall.
Her smirk interrupts the late-night work.

Dede forced a smile, nausea rising in her throat. She knew what those "lives" entailed - cocktails in overpriced lounges, designer handbags worth more than a month's rent, a blind eye conveniently turned to the origins of such luxuries.

Dede forces a smile despite her growing unease.
She recognizes the cost of looking away.

"Almost done, Helen," Dede replied, her voice tight. "Just making sure everything adds up." The double meaning hung heavy in the air, and perhaps a flicker of unease crossed Helen's face before she flounced away, a cloud of expensive perfume in her wake.

Dede answers Helen as her colleague walks away.
The accounts carry an uncomfortable double meaning.

Dede closed her eyes, the weight of the evidence pressing down. It had started as a hunch, an itch her trained mind couldn't ignore. But now, it was a sprawling monster, its tentacles reaching into the highest echelons of HX Petroleum.  Her hands trembled as she hit 'save,' encrypting the damning file. This was no longer about fixing an accounting error; this was a choice that would crack her carefully constructed world wide open.

Dede saves the evidence with trembling hands.
The file turns an accounting problem into a choice.

Should she bury the evidence, pretend she saw nothing? Self-preservation whispered that was the smartest, safest path. But another voice, a small and stubborn echo of her father's idealistic nature, whispered a different word: justice.

Dede weighs staying silent against exposing the fraud.
Her conscience will not let the evidence disappear.

Rain began to streak the windows, mirroring the turmoil within her. Sleep was a distant fantasy. Tonight, she would wrestle with more than numbers. By dawn, Dede Ogunsanwo would have to decide which terrified her more: the vast corruption of HX, or the consequences of exposing it.

Rain streaks the office windows as Dede faces her decision.
By dawn she must choose what frightens her more.
There’s more to the story.
