CHAPTER 7

Fractured: Chapter 7 - 9:00 PM Sunday (Final Target)

The forest was dark, the trees looming over Kemi like ancient sentinels, their branches shifting ominously in the cold breeze. She had followed the coordinates sent to her phone, heart pounding in her chest, knowing this was her final target. The cabin came into view, barely visible in the moonlight—weathered, abandoned, and tucked away from prying eyes.

Kemi follows her phone toward an abandoned cabin in a moonlit forest.
Kemi follows her phone toward an abandoned cabin in a moonlit forest.

Her head was still swimming from Felix’s last words back in the tech firm, his bloodied body slumped over the desk. “Trust no one... not even your own mind.” The words haunted her, looping endlessly in her thoughts. She still didn’t know who was orchestrating this nightmare or why. Every target she had encountered held a piece of the puzzle, but none had given her the full picture. And now, as she approached the wooden door of the cabin, her instincts screamed at her to turn back.

Kemi hesitates at the cabin door, haunted by Felix's warning.
Her instincts urge her to turn back.

The phone in her pocket vibrated, the countdown ticking down mercilessly. 13 hours left.

Kemi pauses at the cabin as the phone vibrates in her pocket.
The countdown keeps pressing her forward.

Kemi entered cautiously, her senses heightened. The door creaked as it opened, revealing a dimly lit room. Inside, a woman stood by the window, her back turned to Kemi. She was startled by the sound of the door but did not move immediately. The atmosphere in the cabin was heavy with tension, the smell of damp wood and decay clinging to the air.

Kemi enters the cabin and finds a woman standing with her back to the door.
The quiet room holds an unexpected encounter.

The woman turned around slowly, her face pale in the dim light, but Kemi felt a strange, deep sense of recognition she couldn’t place. The woman stared at her, then exhaled deeply.

The woman turns toward Kemi, stirring a sense of recognition.
A familiar face emerges in the dim cabin.

“Kemi... it’s been a long time,” the woman said softly.

Bimpe softly greets Kemi in the moonlit cabin.
A familiar voice breaks the silence.

Kemi froze. The woman’s voice—gentle, familiar. But Kemi’s memory was still a blank slate. “Who... who are you?”

Kemi freezes, unable to recognize the woman before her.
Her voice is familiar, but the memory is missing.

The woman smiled sadly. “I’m Bimpe. Your best friend.”

Bimpe offers a sad smile as she introduces herself.
Bimpe tells Kemi they were best friends.

The words hit Kemi like a physical blow. Her mind raced, searching desperately for a memory, anything to anchor this revelation. “I don’t... I don’t remember.”

Kemi struggles to recover any memory of Bimpe.
She cannot remember their friendship.

“I know,” Bimpe said, walking closer. “That’s how they wanted it. They took everything from you. Your memories, your life, your sense of who you are.”

Bimpe steps closer and explains that Kemi's memories were taken.
Her lost memories were deliberate.

Kemi’s breathing quickened. “Who? Who did this to me?”

Kemi urgently asks who took her memories.
Fear sharpens into a desperate question.

Bimpe’s eyes darkened. “Your husband, Kemi. Akin... he’s not who you think he is. He’s the reason for all of this.”

Bimpe gravely reveals that Kemi's husband is responsible.
Bimpe names Akin as the cause.

Kemi shook her head in disbelief. “No... no, that’s not possible. He’s the reason I’m doing this—to save him and my daughter.”

Kemi shakes her head, refusing Bimpe's accusation.
She believed she was saving her family.

Bimpe stepped closer, her voice lowering to a whisper. “He manipulated you. He used you. You weren’t meant to remember this, but Akin has been running a criminal empire for years. The targets—they were all people who knew too much. Including me.”

Bimpe whispers that Akin used Kemi to silence people who knew too much.
Bimpe is one of the remaining targets.

Kemi’s heart raced, her hands trembling. “That’s not true... it can’t be.”

Kemi's hands tremble as she tries to deny the truth.
The accusation becomes harder to dismiss.

Bimpe reached out, taking Kemi’s hand. “You were going to expose him. You found out about the corruption, the bribes, the murders, and he couldn’t risk it. He gave you amnesia, erased everything that made you who you are. And now, he’s using you to clean up his mess.”

Bimpe takes Kemi's hand as she explains why her memories were erased.
A reassuring hand accompanies a devastating truth.

Kemi stumbled backward, struggling to breathe. “But... why? Why me?”

Kemi stumbles backward, struggling to understand why she was chosen.
The truth leaves her breathless.

“Because you were the last person he thought would betray him. And because you’re the only one who could tie him to everything. He needed to make sure you didn’t remember.”

Bimpe explains that only Kemi could connect Akin to his crimes.
Her husband needed her to forget.

The realization hit Kemi like a tidal wave, the fragments of her shattered memories slowly piecing together. Her husband—her supposed reason for fighting—was the mastermind. All the death, the suffering, had been orchestrated by the man she was trying to save.

Kemi realizes that the man she hoped to save arranged the killings.
The betrayal finally becomes clear.

Before Kemi could react, a gunshot rang out, shattering the air. Bimpe’s eyes widened, a look of shock and pain contorting her face as she fell to the floor, blood pooling around her. Kemi dropped to her knees, grabbing Bimpe’s hand as her breath weakened.

Kemi kneels beside the fallen Bimpe and grabs her hand.
A sudden shot cuts their conversation short.

With her final breath, Bimpe whispered, “Your husband... he’s the one.”

Kemi bends close to hear Bimpe's final whispered warning.
Bimpe names her husband once more.

Kemi sat frozen, her heart pounding in her chest. The final piece had fallen into place, but it had come too late. The realization that her husband—Akin—was the orchestrator of this entire twisted game made her blood run cold.

Kemi sits frozen beside Bimpe, absorbing the truth about Akin.
Understanding arrives too late.

The phone buzzed again, snapping her out of her shock. The voice on the other end was calm, almost amused.

An incoming call snaps Kemi out of her shock beside Bimpe.
The voice returns with another demand.

“Tick-tock, Kemi. You’re running out of time. Now, for your final task...”

Kemi listens tensely as the caller announces a final task.
Time is running out.

The clock was still ticking. Kemi rose slowly from the ground, her mind racing. If Bimpe had been telling the truth, then her next move wasn’t just about survival—it was about stopping Akin before anyone else died.

Kemi rises from the floor, determined to stop Akin.
Her next move is to prevent another death.

The voice on the phone spoke again. “Find him, Kemi. Find Akin. Or lose everything.”

Kemi listens at the cabin doorway as the caller orders her to find Akin.
The final task sends her toward her husband.
There’s more to the story.
