CHAPTER 2

Fractured: Chapter 2 - 11:00 AM Sunday - First Target

The sun blazed overhead, casting a harsh light on the bustling marketplace. Kemi moved through the sea of vendors, their colorful wares and loud calls blending into a cacophony of noise. Her heart pounded with each step, her mind still spinning from the ultimatum that had shattered her reality just an hour ago.

Kemi walks tensely through a sunlit Lagos market crowded with colorful stalls and vendors.

She scanned the crowd, her eyes searching for her first target—Chike Nwosu, a businessman engaged in shady dealings. Her gaze caught sight of him standing near a stall, his expensive suit and imposing presence contrasting sharply with the chaotic scene around him. He stood next to a younger man, his voice low as he discussed something in hushed tones.

Kemi spots Chike quietly speaking to a younger man beside a stall.

Kemi’s body froze. Her fingers tingled as she replayed the voice from the phone call, commanding her to kill him. But how could she? She had no memory of this man, no idea of who she was or what had led her to this moment. How could she kill a stranger, let alone anyone?

Kemi freezes with horror at the command she has been given.

The crowd jostled her as she stood there, paralyzed by indecision. A child ran past, laughing, while a vendor shouted in the distance. Kemi blinked, struggling to focus, the noise drowning out her thoughts.

"You have to do this," she whispered to herself, trying to calm her breathing. "If they really have your family..."

Kemi whispers to herself, struggling to control her breathing.

Her eyes darted back to Chike, who had just received a briefcase from the younger man. The deal seemed to be finalizing. The weight of the gun in her bag felt heavier than before. She reached for it hesitantly, the cool metal pressing against her fingers. Every instinct screamed at her to stop, to think, to—

BANG!

A sudden unseen gunshot startles Kemi and the surrounding shoppers.
A sudden unseen gunshot startles Kemi and the surrounding shoppers.

A sharp crack pierced the air, and Kemi flinched violently as Chike’s body crumpled to the ground, blood seeping from a clean shot to his head. The marketplace erupted in screams and chaos. People scattered in all directions, vendors overturned tables, and the once lively market turned into a scene of panic.

Kemi flinches as Chike collapses in the market and vendors flee.
A shot sends the market into panic.

Kemi stood frozen in place, her mind racing. Her breath came in shallow gasps as she looked at Chike’s lifeless body. It wasn’t supposed to happen like this. Someone had been watching her. Someone had ensured the job was done.

Kemi stands motionless, staring toward Chike on the ground amid scattered produce.
Someone else has ensured the target falls.

The phone in her pocket buzzed again, jolting her back to the present. She fumbled with it, her fingers shaking as she brought it to her ear.

Kemi shakily raises a phone to her ear beside abandoned market stalls.
The phone pulls her back to the present.

“You’re wasting time, Kemi.” The voice was calm but edged with frustration. “Your hesitation will cost you. Chief Obiora is next. Don’t make the same mistake again.”

Kemi listens tensely to the unseen caller under colorful market awnings.
Another target is named.

She swallowed hard, her throat dry. “I—I didn’t know what to do.”

Kemi struggles to answer the caller, clutching her blouse beside an overturned crate.
She cannot explain her hesitation.

“No excuses,” the voice interrupted. “You’re running out of time. Head to his office. You have until 1:00 PM.”

Kemi grips her duffel strap while listening to a deadline on the phone.
The caller leaves no room for excuses.

The line went dead.

Kemi lowers the phone and stares at its dark screen after the call ends.
The line goes silent.

Kemi’s eyes drifted to the phone’s timer. 22:47:13 and counting. The sinking realization washed over her: she wasn’t alone in this. Someone was ensuring the targets would fall, whether by her hand or another.

Seen from above, Kemi studies her phone beside a weathered market wall.
She realizes the killings are being controlled.

She couldn’t afford to hesitate again. If her family was truly in danger, she had no choice.

Kemi walks away from the disrupted market with her black duffel over her shoulder.
Fear hardens into determination.
There’s more to the story.
