CHAPTER 10

Fractured - The End (The Final Choice)

Kemi gritted her teeth, the pain of the last 24 hours boiling in her chest. She had been a pawn in Akin’s elaborate scheme to eliminate his enemies, all while keeping her in the dark about her own life. Her family had been dangled as bait, and now she was finally free from the game, but at what cost? Did she truly win, or had she lost everything in the process?

Kemi weighs the cost of her escape as police take Akin away.
Kemi weighs the cost of her escape as police take Akin away.

She was escorted back to the police car as Akin continued to scream her name, warning her that she would never find their daughter without him. Kemi refused to believe it. Somewhere deep down, she still felt the faint echo of a mother’s bond, a connection that no amount of manipulation could sever.

Kemi walks toward the police car while Akin shouts behind her.
She refuses to surrender hope for her daughter.

As the police officer opened the door for her, she paused. “My daughter,” she whispered. “You said you located her. Where is she?”

Kemi pauses at the open police-car door to ask about her daughter.
She needs to know where her child is.

The officer’s face softened. “We found her at the location Akin mentioned—safe. She’s at the station waiting for you.”

The officer reassures Kemi that her daughter has been found safe.
Her daughter is waiting at the station.

The relief hit Kemi like a wave. She hadn’t killed anyone, but the choices she had made, the paths she had taken, had still left a trail of destruction. Yet in this moment, the one person she needed to see, to hold, was her daughter.

Kemi feels relief after hearing that her daughter is safe.
She longs to see and hold her daughter.

Hours later, at the police station, Kemi sat in a small room, clutching her daughter’s tiny hand. The little girl had been crying, her small voice trembling as she whispered, “Mummy, I was so scared. Daddy said you wouldn’t come.”

Kemi clasps her tearful daughter’s hand at the police station.
At last, Kemi can hold her daughter’s hand.

Kemi’s heart shattered again. “I’m here, my love. I’ll always be here.”

Kemi reassures Tola that she will always be there.
Her first promise is to stay beside her daughter.

The door creaked open, and the officer entered, holding a file. “We’ve got everything we need, Mrs. Awosika. Akin’s confession is airtight, thanks to your recording. His reign is over.”

The officer enters with a file confirming the evidence against Akin.
The recording has secured the case.

Kemi nodded absently, her mind replaying the events over and over. Each moment, each choice, had brought her to this point. But now, even though Akin was going to prison, there was no going back to the life she once knew.

Kemi nods while absorbing how much her life has changed.
Akin’s arrest cannot restore the life she knew.

“Are we free now, Mummy?” Tola’s voice broke through her thoughts.

Tola asks her mother whether they are free.
A quiet question breaks through Kemi’s thoughts.

Kemi knelt in front of her daughter, brushing the hair from her face. “We are, my love. We’re free.”

Kemi kneels before Tola and brushes hair from her face.
She tells her daughter they are free.

But as she stood up and looked out the window of the police station, the sun shining down on the world outside, she wondered if she could ever truly be free. Could she escape the mental prison Akin had built around her, the shattered fragments of a life she no longer remembered? Could she rebuild, knowing that she had been a pawn in the darkest game imaginable?

Kemi stands by the station window and wonders about the future.
Freedom leaves difficult questions to face.

Her reflection in the glass stared back at her, fractured and fragmented, much like her memories. The road to healing would be long and uncertain, but with her daughter by her side, she knew she had something to fight for.

Kemi studies her reflection with Tola beside her.
Her daughter gives her a reason to keep going.

Kemi turned away from the window and walked out of the station, holding Tola’s hand. The city seemed quieter now, the chaos of the last day fading behind her. She had survived, but she wasn’t the same person who had woken up that Sunday morning, confused and terrified.

Kemi and Tola leave the station hand in hand.
They walk away together, changed by the day.

As they stepped into the sunlight, Kemi realized that healing wasn’t about finding all the answers—it was about learning to live with the pieces she had left. And for the first time in 24 hours, she felt the stirrings of hope.

Kemi and Tola step into sunlight together.
The first stirrings of hope return.
The end. Stay a little longer?
