CHAPTER 4

Black River: Chapter 4

The streets of Lagos were alive with the usual chaos as the city transitioned from the heat of the day to the darkness of the night. For most, it was just another evening of honking cars, street vendors calling out, and the pulse of a city that never truly slept. But tonight, something else lurked beneath the surface—a quiet storm brewing within the police force.

Traffic and street vendors fill Lagos at dusk while police vehicles gather for an operation.
A storm gathers beneath the evening bustle.

Detective Durojaiye leaned over the hood of his car, the blue and red lights from police sirens illuminating his determined face. He was issuing rapid-fire orders to his team as they prepared to strike. His voice was calm, even as the weight of the operation pressed down on him. It was now or never.

“Checkpoints at every corner,” Durojaiye barked into his radio. “I don’t care if they so much as sneeze—search them. Olumide’s boys can’t slip through our fingers this time.”

The operation was a massive coordinated raid. For weeks, Durojaiye’s team had been gathering intel, meticulously mapping out Olumide’s network of warehouses, safehouses, and hideouts scattered across Lagos. Tonight, they were hitting them all simultaneously. It was a gamble—a huge risk—but the stakes had never been higher. Femi’s murder had tipped the scales, and the force was under pressure to show results. If Olumide was behind the killing, this would be Durojaiye’s best chance to catch him in the act and finally take down his empire.

He checked his watch—time was ticking. They had to move fast.

“All units, go!” Durojaiye gave the order, and the city erupted in controlled chaos.

At the same time, across town, Olumide was on the move. He sat in the back of a sleek black SUV, his mind racing as they sped through the streets toward Lanre’s compound. Lanre, the leader of a rival gang, had long been a thorn in Olumide’s side. In recent weeks, whispers on the street had suggested that Lanre might have had a hand in Femi’s murder. Olumide didn’t believe in coincidences—Lanre had everything to gain by taking Femi out and destabilizing his empire.

But if Lanre thought Olumide would let him get away with it, he was sorely mistaken.

"Five minutes out," Bode muttered from the driver's seat, eyes fixed on the road ahead.

Olumide didn’t respond, his gaze hard and cold. His mind was elsewhere—on Femi, on the rising threat of Taiwo, on the crumbling foundation of everything he had built. If Lanre had a hand in Femi's death, tonight would be the night he paid for it.

“Boss,” Jide said from the seat beside him, his fingers tapping nervously against the laptop balanced on his knees. “About what we found earlier—the financial records. It’s bigger than we thought.”

Olumide looked at him sharply. "Go on."

"Femi was digging into more than just internal discrepancies. He was tracing connections between our business and some very high-level people. Politicians, government officials, even international syndicates. If Taiwo or Lanre has that information, they could be using it to unravel everything."

Jide explains the wider connections.

Olumide’s jaw tightened. “They’re trying to expose us.”

Jide nodded. “And if they do, it’s not just us. They’ll bring down everyone. The whole network.”

Olumide leaned back, exhaling slowly. He had built his empire on control—every piece of the puzzle was where it needed to be. But now, someone was pulling the strings behind the scenes, using Femi’s death to chip away at that control. Whoever it was, they weren’t just coming for Olumide—they were coming for the entire structure of power that kept Lagos running in the shadows.

“Then we cut the strings,” Olumide said finally. “We take Lanre, and then we hunt down Taiwo. We stop this before it starts.”

At Lanre’s compound, the scene was one of eerie silence. The front gates were open, the usual guards nowhere to be seen. Olumide’s SUV pulled up cautiously, and Bode was the first to step out, gun drawn, scanning the area for any signs of movement.

“Something’s not right,” Bode muttered.

Olumide exited the vehicle, his senses on high alert. The compound was too quiet. No sounds of laughter or music. No voices. Only the faint rustling of the wind against the palm trees.

They moved as a unit, creeping toward the front door of Lanre’s mansion. The door creaked open under Bode’s push. Inside, the smell of blood hit them immediately.

“Jesus,” Jide whispered, stepping back in shock.

The room was a massacre. Bodies lay strewn across the floor—Lanre’s men, all of them cut down with brutal efficiency. Blood stained the walls, pooling on the marble floors. And there, in the center of the carnage, sat Lanre himself, his body slumped in a chair, his throat slit. His dead eyes stared blankly at the ceiling.

But what caught Olumide’s attention was not the bodies, but the message scrawled across the wall in blood: You’re too late, King. The game has just begun.

Olumide’s chest tightened. His blood boiled as he stared at the chilling words. This wasn’t just a message—it was a declaration of war. Taiwo was making his move, striking at every angle to weaken Olumide’s control over the city. And Femi’s death was just the beginning.

Bode stood frozen, his eyes wide. "What the hell is this, boss?"

Bode asks what happened.

Olumide didn’t answer immediately. His mind was working furiously. This was beyond Lanre. Lanre had been nothing more than another piece in a larger game. Whoever had killed him—and Femi—was working with precision, unraveling Olumide’s empire piece by piece. But what was the endgame?

"We need to move," Olumide said sharply, pulling out his phone. "Get back to the safe house. Now."

Jide hesitated. “Boss… this isn’t just about us anymore. If Taiwo’s got the backing of the people Femi was investigating—if he's connected to the politicians and international syndicates—we could be looking at the entire city coming down around us. This is bigger than just us.”

Jide hesitates before leaving.

Olumide shot him a look that could kill. “I’m not going to sit around and watch my empire fall. Taiwo wants to play games? Fine. I’ll show him who the real king of this city is.”

As they hurried out of the compound, Olumide's mind raced. Whoever was behind this was orchestrating something far bigger than he had imagined. But he wasn’t going to wait for the walls to close in. He was going to strike first, and strike hard.

Meanwhile, back at the police station, Durojaiye was sifting through piles of documents and evidence collected from the day’s raids. His team had hit several of Olumide’s warehouses, turning up financial records that linked the crime boss to high-level government officials and even international crime syndicates. The deeper Durojaiye dug, the more dangerous the connections became.

“We’ve got enough to bring Olumide in,” his captain said, leaning over Durojaiye’s shoulder. “But this… this goes beyond him. If we keep pushing, we’re going to be stepping on some very important toes.”

The captain warns Durojaiye.

Durojaiye looked up, his expression hard. “We’ve been stepping on toes for years. The whole city’s corrupt, and this is our chance to finally clean house. We need to keep going.”

The captain hesitated. “Be careful, Durojaiye. You’re digging into places that people don’t want you to go.”

Durojaiye’s phone buzzed, pulling him from the conversation. It was a text—another anonymous message. It read: The river runs deeper than you think. Be at the old warehouse by midnight.

Durojaiye clenched his jaw. It was a trap, he knew it. But he didn’t care. Whoever was sending these messages knew something, and Durojaiye was going to find out what.
