The harsh glare of the overhead light in Wale's apartment seemed to mock the turmoil within him. Sleep was a distant prospect. The cryptic voicemail echoed in his mind, its chilling message intertwining with the revelation Folake had dropped earlier.  He needed answers, and Folake was the only one who might hold them.

As if sensing his turmoil, Folake rose from the worn sofa and sat beside him, her eyes filled with a deep sadness that mirrored his own. Wale took a deep breath, the weight of the past and the accusation hanging heavy in the air.

"Demola mentioned something about you at the hospital," he began, his voice strained. "He said you were a stranger. But mom..." He trailed off, unsure how to proceed.

Folake's hand flew to her mouth, her eyes widening in fear. A wave of memories washed over Wale, triggered by her reaction. Vivid flashbacks of a carefree childhood filled his mind – a time before resentment and bitterness had taken root. Back then, he and Folake were inseparable, their laughter echoing through the expansive Akinsanya mansion.

But a shadow loomed over their happiness. Wale's father, Chief Akinsanya, had disapproved of their friendship, fueled by a simmering tension with Folake's family. One day, the carefree days abruptly ended. Chief Akinsanya, in a fit of rage, had severed ties with Folake's family, forcing Wale and Folake apart.

The revelation sent a shiver down Wale's spine. The hostility between his father and Folake's family – could it be connected to the poisoning?  He looked at Folake, a question forming on his lips.

"Years ago," Folake continued, her voice trembling, "something terrible happened to me. My family... they were in a difficult situation. Mama Akinsanya, she..."  Her voice broke, and she covered her face with her hands, her body wracked with silent sobs.

The weight of her words settled on Wale like a leaden blanket. Mama Akinsanya, the woman he thought he knew, had a hidden past, a past that somehow intertwined with Folake's.  A past that could hold the key to the present turmoil.
