When the Crow Flies: Chapter 6

The hospital room was sterile and quiet, the steady beep of the heart monitor the only sound breaking the silence. Adesuwa lay on the bed, staring at the ceiling, her body aching from the impact of the accident. She hadn’t expected to end up here, but she knew this wasn’t an accident. Someone wanted her dead. The realization sent a chill down her spine, mingling with a new, persistent sense of paranoia.

She winced as she shifted in bed, her mind racing through the events of the past few days. The attack had been a clear warning, a desperate attempt to scare her away. But she was more certain than ever that this was bigger than a single person. This conspiracy had threads that ran deep, snaring everyone around her. She no longer knew who she could trust—even Tayo seemed to be hiding something.

As if on cue, Tayo appeared at the doorway. He entered the room quietly, his eyes flickering with a mixture of relief and guilt as they met hers. He stood by her bedside, his hands stuffed in his pockets, looking as if he’d rather be anywhere else.

“Adesuwa,” he murmured, his voice low. “I’m… I’m sorry. I didn’t think things would get this bad.”

She watched him carefully, searching his face for answers. “Didn’t think what would get this bad, Tayo?” she asked, her tone sharper than she intended.

He flinched, looking away. “I told you before—you need to let this go. These people… they don’t play games. They’re dangerous. You’re risking your life digging into things that were meant to stay buried.”

She shook her head, anger simmering just beneath the surface. “And you? Are you one of them? Are you hiding something from me too?”

His eyes widened, hurt flashing across his face. “I’m trying to protect you, Adesuwa. I never wanted you to get hurt. But you don’t understand what you’re up against. These aren’t just ordinary people. They have power, money… connections that reach far beyond this town.”

“Then help me understand,” she replied, her voice tinged with desperation. “If you really care about me, tell me the truth.”

He looked at her, the conflict plain in his eyes. “I can’t,” he said finally, his voice barely a whisper. “There are things I know—things I shouldn’t have ever found out. If I tell you, we’ll both be in danger.”

She felt a surge of frustration, mixed with a painful longing. She had once trusted Tayo with everything, but now he felt like a stranger. He seemed torn, unwilling to say more, but his presence only added to her suspicions. Did he know more about the conspiracy than he was letting on? Was he complicit, or just as trapped as she was?

“Fine,” she said coldly, turning away from him. “If you won’t help me, I’ll find the truth on my own.”

He reached out, placing a hand on her arm. “Adesuwa, please. I’m begging you—walk away. This isn’t worth your life.”

She pulled her arm away, glaring at him. “I’ve already lost my life, Tayo. Ten years of it, stolen from me. I have nothing left to lose.”

He stood there, silent, then slowly backed away, looking as if he wanted to say something more but couldn’t find the words. After a moment, he left, leaving her alone with her thoughts and the crushing weight of betrayal.

As the night deepened, the hospital grew quiet. Shadows crept across the walls, and Adesuwa lay awake, feeling the suffocating presence of fear settle over her. Every creak of the floor, every distant murmur seemed amplified, as if the walls themselves were watching her.

She dozed off, slipping into a restless sleep, only to be jerked awake by the soft creak of the door. Her heart raced as she sat up, squinting into the darkness. A shadowy figure stood at the foot of her bed, silhouetted against the faint glow from the hallway.

She opened her mouth to scream, but the figure raised a finger to their lips, silencing her. Leaning closer, they whispered, their voice low and menacing. “You’ll never find out the truth. Leave now, or you won’t live to regret it.”

Before she could react, the figure slipped back into the shadows, disappearing as quickly as they had come. She sat there, frozen, her pulse pounding in her ears. The threat hung in the air, filling her with a fresh wave of terror. But as the initial fear faded, it was replaced by something stronger—a fierce determination.

They could try to scare her, but she was done being a victim. Whoever was behind this conspiracy was desperate to keep the truth hidden. And that meant she was getting closer. She didn’t care how many threats they threw her way. She would find them, and she would bring their secrets crashing down.
