Fractured: Chapter 2 - 11:00 AM Sunday - First Target

The sun blazed overhead, casting a harsh light on the bustling marketplace. Kemi moved through the sea of vendors, their colorful wares and loud calls blending into a cacophony of noise. Her heart pounded with each step, her mind still spinning from the ultimatum that had shattered her reality just an hour ago.

She scanned the crowd, her eyes searching for her first target—Chike Nwosu, a businessman engaged in shady dealings. Her gaze caught sight of him standing near a stall, his expensive suit and imposing presence contrasting sharply with the chaotic scene around him. He stood next to a younger man, his voice low as he discussed something in hushed tones.

Kemi’s body froze. Her fingers tingled as she replayed the voice from the phone call, commanding her to kill him. But how could she? She had no memory of this man, no idea of who she was or what had led her to this moment. How could she kill a stranger, let alone anyone?

The crowd jostled her as she stood there, paralyzed by indecision. A child ran past, laughing, while a vendor shouted in the distance. Kemi blinked, struggling to focus, the noise drowning out her thoughts.

"You have to do this," she whispered to herself, trying to calm her breathing. "If they really have your family..."

Her eyes darted back to Chike, who had just received a briefcase from the younger man. The deal seemed to be finalizing. The weight of the gun in her bag felt heavier than before. She reached for it hesitantly, the cool metal pressing against her fingers. Every instinct screamed at her to stop, to think, to—

BANG!

A sharp crack pierced the air, and Kemi flinched violently as Chike’s body crumpled to the ground, blood seeping from a clean shot to his head. The marketplace erupted in screams and chaos. People scattered in all directions, vendors overturned tables, and the once lively market turned into a scene of panic.

Kemi stood frozen in place, her mind racing. Her breath came in shallow gasps as she looked at Chike’s lifeless body. It wasn’t supposed to happen like this. Someone had been watching her. Someone had ensured the job was done.

The phone in her pocket buzzed again, jolting her back to the present. She fumbled with it, her fingers shaking as she brought it to her ear.

“You’re wasting time, Kemi.” The voice was calm but edged with frustration. “Your hesitation will cost you. Chief Obiora is next. Don’t make the same mistake again.”

She swallowed hard, her throat dry. “I—I didn’t know what to do.”

“No excuses,” the voice interrupted. “You’re running out of time. Head to his office. You have until 1:00 PM.”

The line went dead.

Kemi’s eyes drifted to the phone’s timer. 22:47:13 and counting. The sinking realization washed over her: she wasn’t alone in this. Someone was ensuring the targets would fall, whether by her hand or another.

She couldn’t afford to hesitate again. If her family was truly in danger, she had no choice.
