Mask Of Dusk: Chapter 5

Kemi’s discovery of the hidden passageway weighed heavily on Timi’s mind. As they strategized on their next steps, the doorbell rang, breaking the tense silence. Nkechi answered and soon returned, announcing the arrival of a detective. Timi and Kemi exchanged wary glances as they made their way to the foyer.

"Good afternoon," the detective said, introducing himself. "I'm Inspector Wale Ojo. I'm here investigating a recent disappearance in the area. The young woman was last seen near this estate, and I have a few questions."

Timi led Wale to the sitting room, where Adaeze and Chidi were already seated. Adaeze’s demeanor remained calm and cooperative, but Timi noticed a subtle tension in her posture. Chidi, on the other hand, looked more anxious than usual.

“Inspector, we’re more than happy to assist with your investigation,” Adaeze said smoothly. “Please, ask your questions.”

Wale began with routine inquiries about the estate’s activities and recent visitors. Adaeze answered each question with practiced ease, subtly steering the conversation away from any potentially incriminating details. However, Wale’s probing nature was evident as he pressed on with more specific questions about the night of the disappearance.

“Mrs. Okafor, can you account for everyone’s whereabouts on the night in question?” Wale asked, his gaze unwavering.

Adaeze smiled. “Of course. We were all here, enjoying a quiet evening. The staff can confirm this.”

Wale nodded but seemed unconvinced. Turning to Timi, he asked, “Mr. Adebanjo, as a guest here, have you noticed anything unusual?”

Timi hesitated, aware of the delicate balance he needed to maintain. “Well, Inspector, I’ve been focused on my work. But now that you mention it, there have been some strange occurrences—nothing concrete, just a general feeling of unease.”

Wale’s eyes sharpened. “Interesting. I’d like to speak with you privately, if you don’t mind.”

Timi agreed, and they moved to a quieter room. Once alone, Wale’s polite demeanor gave way to a more serious tone. “Mr. Adebanjo, off the record, I have reason to believe this estate is involved in illegal activities. I need someone on the inside to help me gather evidence.”

Timi’s heart raced. “Inspector, I’ve found some disturbing things here—old photographs, documents hinting at a cult. I was planning to dig deeper, but I’ll need your help.”

Wale nodded, impressed by Timi’s resolve. “I appreciate your cooperation. We need to be discreet. Any information you find, bring it directly to me.”

As they finished their conversation, Wale prepared to leave. Timi felt a newfound determination; he had an ally in Wale and a plan to uncover the estate’s dark secrets.

However, as Wale drove away from the estate, a sense of foreboding lingered in the air. He was deep in thought, replaying the details of his conversation with Timi, when he noticed a car following him. His instincts kicked in, and he tried to shake off his pursuer, but the car stayed on his tail.

The road grew narrower, and just as Wale thought he had lost them, the other car accelerated, ramming into his vehicle. Wale lost control, his car skidding off the road and crashing into a ditch. Dazed and injured, he struggled to get out, but before he could react, a shadowy figure approached, striking him hard on the head. Everything went black.

Back at the estate, Timi and Kemi continued their investigation, unaware of the danger that Wale faced. They knew they were running out of time, but they also knew they couldn’t back down. The Okafor estate held many secrets, and they were closer than ever to uncovering the truth.
