Mask Of Dusk: Chapter 4

Timi Adebanjo was in the middle of reviewing some blueprints when he heard the doorbell ring. He wasn’t expecting any visitors and was surprised when Nkechi announced that a woman named Kemi was at the door. His heart skipped a beat. Kemi, his estranged wife, had shown up out of the blue.

As Timi walked towards the entrance, he couldn’t help but feel a mix of emotions. Their last conversation had ended in a heated argument, and they had been separated for almost a year. Yet, there she was, standing in the doorway, her eyes searching his face for any sign of welcome.

“Kemi,” Timi said, his voice a mix of surprise and caution. “What are you doing here?”

Kemi offered a tentative smile. “Adaeze invited me. She said you might need some help with the project, and... I wanted to see you.”

Timi’s mind raced. Adaeze inviting Kemi without telling him was suspicious. He glanced back at the hallway, wondering what Adaeze’s intentions were. “Come in,” he said finally, stepping aside to let her pass.

As Kemi entered the grand foyer, she couldn’t help but marvel at the opulence of the Okafor estate. “This place is incredible,” she said, her curiosity evident. “What exactly are you working on?”

Timi led her to his workspace, explaining the project and the strange occurrences he had experienced. Kemi listened intently, her concern for Timi mingling with her curiosity about the estate.

“Have you noticed anything... off about the Okafors?” Kemi asked. “I mean, Adaeze seemed really eager to get me involved, but she wouldn’t give me a straight answer about why.”

Timi nodded, sharing his suspicions about the couple. “There’s something they’re not telling us. I’ve found some disturbing things, and I think they’re hiding more.”

Kemi’s expression grew serious. “Then we need to find out what it is. Together.”

As they delved deeper into their investigation, Timi and Kemi started to uncover inconsistencies in the Okafors’ behavior. Adaeze’s charm seemed forced, and Chidi’s paranoia became more pronounced. The couple’s stories about their past didn’t add up, and there were gaps in their timelines that raised more questions than answers.

Despite their focus on the investigation, the old feelings between Timi and Kemi began to resurface. Working closely together rekindled their bond, but the trust issues that had driven them apart still lingered. They had moments of connection, but doubts and unresolved tensions always seemed to creep back in.

One evening, as Timi was going over some documents in the room Adaeze had provided for them, Kemi decided to explore the mansion on her own. She wandered through the hallways, drawn to the sense of mystery that pervaded the estate. Her curiosity led her to a part of the mansion she hadn’t seen before—a dark, narrow corridor that seemed to lead nowhere.

As she walked down the corridor, she noticed a slight draft coming from behind a large, ornate mirror. Kemi hesitated, then pushed the mirror aside, revealing a hidden doorway. Her pulse quickened as she opened the door to reveal a staircase leading down into the darkness.

With her phone’s flashlight in hand, Kemi descended the stairs, each step echoing in the silence. The air grew colder, and the walls seemed to close in around her. At the bottom of the stairs, she found herself in an underground chamber filled with strange symbols and artifacts. In the center of the room was an altar, its surface stained with something dark and ominous.

Kemi’s breath caught in her throat. This was no ordinary storage room—it was a place of dark rituals. She took a step back, her mind racing with the implications of what she had found. She needed to get back to Timi and tell him everything.

As Kemi turned to leave, she heard footsteps above her, followed by voices. She quickly hid behind a column, listening intently. The voices were muffled, but she recognized Adaeze’s calm tones and Chidi’s frantic whispers.

“...must not find out about this,” Adaeze was saying. “We’re too close to let anyone ruin our plans.”

Kemi’s heart pounded in her chest as she realized the full extent of the danger they were in. She waited until the voices faded, then hurried back up the stairs, praying she wouldn’t be discovered.

When she finally reached Timi, she was breathless and trembling. “Timi, I found something,” she said urgently. “A hidden chamber. It’s... it’s worse than we thought.”

Timi’s eyes widened as he listened to Kemi’s account of the underground chamber. The pieces of the puzzle were falling into place, and the picture they formed was terrifying.

“We need to get out of here,” Timi said, his voice firm. “But we need to gather more evidence first. If we just leave, they’ll cover it all up.”

Kemi nodded, her resolve matching his. They were in this together, and they would uncover the truth, no matter the cost.

As they made their plans, Kemi noticed a slight draft coming from behind a large, ornate mirror in their room. She hesitated, then pushed the mirror aside, revealing another hidden doorway. "Timi, look at this," she whispered. Her pulse quickened as she opened the door to reveal a staircase leading down into the darkness.
